Scratching the Surface

The publication Scratching the Surface: an Exploration of Graffiti and Street Art is composed of seven essays, written by leading researchers and critics from the world of street art, graffiti, and visual art. With this publication, the Mondriaan Fund attempts to further map out this sometimes uncharted territory for the fund.

The authors, written by Daniël de Jongh, Lene ter Haar together with Robert Kaltenhäuser, Javier Abarca, Stephen Burke, Raenys Martis, Ana Maria Hernandez and Robin Vermeulen, of Scratching the Surface all share their professional and personal experiences with graffiti and street art, offering a range of perspectives on these artforms as well as showcasing their potential.

Eelco van der Lingen, director of the Mondriaan Fund:

Scratching the Surface is a next step in gaining a better understanding of the value of graffiti and street art. These forms of art may not necessarily seek to be understood or institutionalized, yet we are still looking for answers to the questions that continue to arise at our discussions.”

Scratching the Surface is number 16 in the essay series of the Mondriaan Fund and appears in both English and Dutch with supporting images. Published by the Mondriaan Fund in collaboration with Jap Sam Books, printed by NPN Drukkers and designed by Studio Janneke Hendriks. ISBN: 9789076936611

From November 1, the publication Scratching the Surface will be available at Jap Sam Books.
The book launch will take place on Friday, November 1 at 3 p.m. at Penningsfoundation in Eindhoven.
