From 1 to 4 February 2024, the Mondriaan Fund is organising a new edition of Prospects during the anniversary edition of Art Rotterdam. The exhibition takes place in the Distribution Center of the Van Nelle Factory and shows the work of 86 starting artists. All artists received a financial contribution in 2022 within the Artist Start grant of the Mondriaan Fund. The 12th edition of Prospects has been curated by curators Johan Gustavsson and Louise Bjeldbak Henriksen.
The Mondriaan Fund organises the Prospects exhibition each year to give the visibility of starting artists an extra boost. The proximity of Art Rotterdam gives art professionals and collectors, but also a broad group of interested parties, the opportunity to become acquainted with the work of these promising artists.
The range varies from photography to carpets, from video to paintings, and from performances to sculptures. Gustavsson and Bjeldbak Henriksen about the exhibition:
“During the 12th edition of Prospects, visitors will encounter works by 86 talented artists. Together the works offer a compelling snapshot of the current trajectory of contemporary art in The Netherlands. We appreciate working closely with so many extraordinary artists, and while the expressions of the works vary greatly in media and form, there is a shared enthusiasm that connects these artists. This edition, the last in the iconic Van Nelle Factory, showcases many artworks that are intimate and discerning, delving into existential themes such as identity, relationships, our interconnectedness with nature and other living beings – essential elements of the human, lived experience.”
Prospects will take place for the last time in the Van Nelle Factory. From 2025, Prospects will move with Art Rotterdam to Ahoy Rotterdam.
Lose Voice Toolkit
The campaign image of the 12th edition of Prospects is a film still and comes from the new work ‘Lose Voice Toolkit’ by Prospects participant Adele Dipasquale. The work is about children’s language, the power of silence and other forms of non-verbal communication.
NN Art Award
The NN Art Award will be presented again this year. The award consists of a cash prize of €10,000. Prospects artist Mónica Mays has been nominated. New this year is the presentation of the nominees. They will not exhibit in a special stand at Art Rotterdam, but in the prestigious Kunsthal Rotterdam, from February 1 to April 14, 2024. The winner will be announced on Thursday, February 1, 2024.
