Clarification of the budget for Art Media (individuals)

Please read on for an explanation of the budget for individuals: which expenses can and cannot be entered? We also provide more information regarding the personal contribution, the total grant and the grant for invested time.

Eligible expenses (i.e. expenses necessary for and inextricably linked to the envisaged plan) can be included in the budget. The maximum grant offered by the Mondriaan Fund is 90% of the eligible expenses.

The following applies:

The total expenses must equal the total financial coverage, including the contribution offered by the Mondriaan Fund. The budget must be balanced;
Please substantiate notable entries with quotes;
Please state sums excluding VAT. The contribution from the Mondriaan Fund is granted excluding VAT, unless the applicant is exempt from VAT. In this case, include documentation from the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration proving that the applicant is not required to pay VAT;
If another party is involved with the application, their financial contribution must be in acceptable proportion to the contribution you are requesting from the Mondriaan Fund. Please explain why this party’s contribution is in proportion to the requested sum.

Potential entries:

Research expenses.
(Material) expenses for the production of the publication/project.
For projects abroad: a return ticket (economy class).
Renting or purchasing equipment, only in the case that it is essential for making the work and based on depreciation (33% on an annual basis).
Remuneration for third parties working on activities linked to the project can be included in the budget. However, it is not possible to apply for remuneration for third parties collaborating on the project on an equal basis. Such third parties are required to contribute (or apply for funding for) a proportionate part of the budget. A maximum hourly rate of € 50 may be entered for personnel employed by the applicant who are demonstrably working on the project. In this case, upload a copy of the most recent payslip.
Presentation and communication expenses, e.g. advertisements, banners, posters, social media campaigns.

Grant for invested time

It is not possible for applicants to apply for remuneration for themselves, but they can apply for a grant for invested time. The Mondriaan Fund has determined a standard sum of € 1,980 per month in the Netherlands (based on 5 days a week) and abroad (based on 7 days a week). The application should include a substantiation of how much time will be devoted to the project. It is only possible to apply for the grant for the period in question. You will often not work full-time on the plan in the period for which the application is submitted. Please therefore always state how many days (or mornings/afternoons) per week will be spent working on the project. The grant for invested time abroad covers all costs associated with the stay; expenses such as hotel costs, meals and local travel can hence not be included as separate entries in the budget.

Personal contribution

The applicant is expected to make a personal contribution of at least 10% of the eligible expenses, including the time invested. This contribution may consist of crowdfunding, sponsorship, subsidies from other funds, third-party contributions, a rent-free loan from Fonds Kwadraat or a sum from personal income/savings.

Total contribution

The total contribution offered by the Mondriaan Fund is calculated by subtracting the total income from the total expenses, including the time invested.
