Yogyakarta, Indonesia, has historically been the cultural centre of Java, as well as an important university city. Today, there are still many initiatives in the fields of visual art, design, craft, theatre and performance, music, dance, cultural studies, ecology and sustainability, architecture and urban planning. Lots of experimenting has been done within the art practice, but also with the associated work and organisational forms, that are predominantly collective and self-organised.
The city of Yogyakarta is undergoing ever more rapid changes; from gentrification to the increasing influence of religion, from changing power relations surrounding land ownership to new forms of labour and more. Many art initiatives in Yogyakarta deal with these issues, not just through reflection, but also through devising alternatives together, and putting them into practice.
Cemeti-Institute for Art and Society (http://www.cemeti.org) is the oldest platform for contemporary art in Yogyakarta. It was founded in 1988 by artists Mella Jaarsma and Nindityo Adipurnomo, with the aim of offering a place for artists to exhibit their work and exchange ideas. During the Suharto regime (1965-1998), there was little to no room for this.
Artists who come to Cemeti for a working period will be introduced to local artists, curators, artworks, researchers, art spaces and collectives, academics, activists, communities and producers, as well as to the complex social political context of Indonesia, and in particular Yogyakarta. The residency program also includes working visits in the Yogyakarta area. Although Cemeti offers a studio space, it encourages artists to connect directly with local communities, and to relate their practice to local (or global) social or political issues. The residents will be supported by the Cemeti-team, which includes a residency manager, two curators and a programme assistant. In addition to the artist from the Netherlands, there will be one Indonesian artist, and one other foreign artist in residence. The exchange between these three residents makes up an important part of the programme.
During the residency period, Cemeti will organise a number of public activities that highlight the work of the residents. Each artist is also offered the opportunity to give a final presentation in a form that fits their artistic or curatorial research, such as an exhibition, a publication, a website, a workshop, a lecture or a meeting. In 2019 Mirjam Linschooten stayed in Cemeti. Coco Duivenvoorde, Kevin van Braak, Faysal Mroueh, Lidwien van de Ven and Paul Hendrikse have previously stayed there.
For whom
Visual artists can apply for the residency at Cemeti Institute for Art and Society. When you are applying as a duo or a partnership, please be aware that each of you must submit an application separately.
A duo is defined as: 2 artists who structurally create work together. Collaborations can (on occasion) be considered as duos if they submit a joint plan for the working period that leads to one result. In addition, a duo must live and work together in one space during the residency. Please note, you both need to submit separate applications.
Work period
There is 1 work period available:
- 1 March 2025 – 31 May 2025
How much?
The Mondriaan Fund makes a subsidy of € 8.216 available for an artist to help cover travel expenses, material costs and living costs. This sum is intended for 1 person. In addition, the selected resident is expected to pay a 10% personal contribution. The Mondriaan Fund automatically takes this into account in their ultimate subsidy, you do not need to do anything.
The costs for renting the studio and living space are not included in the subsidy amount and are paid directly by the Mondriaan Fund to the Cemeti Institute for Art and Society.
If a duo or collaborative partnership is selected for the residency, the total amount increases proportionally to cover the additional travel and living costs for the second applicant.
The contribution to artists based in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom can be increased to meet any higher travel costs. This is looked at per situation.
Application
The deadline for submitting an application for a work period in 2025 is Thursday 21 March 2024, before 16.00 (Dutch time zone) / 11.00 (Caribbean time zone).
Before submitting an application, please see the Residency page for the terms and conditions, application procedure and assessment procedure.
Please also read the terms and conditions applicable to Mondriaan Fund contributions.
Selection
The selection is made by an advisory committee. Based on the submitted documents, the advisory committee proposes candidates to Cemeti Institute for Art and Society. They make the final decision on the participants for the residency. An interview may be part of their selection process.*
*Please note! Be aware that the processing time for this selection procedure may exceed three months
Other grants for residencies in the Netherlands and other countries
Because only 1 or 2 residents can be selected for any given residency during each application round, it is inevitable that many will be disappointed. For this reason, we point out that it is also possible to apply for an Artist Project at a different residency location. The specific Artist Project residency applied for may not be one of those already being offered in the Mondriaan Fund application rounds.
