In 2023 and 2024, the Mondriaan Fund and the Creative Industries Fund NL are together offering two residency periods at Think Tanger in Tangier, Morocco.

The work period at Think Tanger offers promising artists, curators, art critics and designers the opportunity to conduct research, expand their network and develop their own work. The residency is especially focused on the intersection of art, urbanism and socio-spatial issues.

The cultural sector in Morocco is becoming increasingly international. After previous generations paved the way, a young generation of Moroccan artists is taking art and culture to new heights. Movements and styles are being (re)mixed, popular culture coexists alongside established art, and is also being combined. Morocco’s geographical location makes it a crossroads of influences and styles, while a new generation of artists, designers, programme makers and curators is shaping the art and cultural field in (North) Africa from the inside. A primary motivation underpinning this residency is being able to unite and learn from each other’s perspectives, skills and values.

Think Tanger was founded in 2016. The platform concretely addresses and highlights contemporary social and spatial impacts of urban matters in Tangier, exploring new forms and perspectives. Tangier is a port in the north of Morocco, which has undergone dramatic changes in the past 20 years due to economical and industrial growth. This has impacted the social, spatial and cultural structure of Tangier. Many of these major developments often lack a social and sustainable perspective, and as a result, the local population feels little engagement.

Think Tanger uses a bottom-up approach to address themes including self-organisation, street culture, identity and the appropriation of the public space in relation to major developments. Think Tanger initiates and facilitates projects at the interface between art, craft, design and research. It also organises workshops, talks, open studios, exhibitions, podcasts and residencies. Think Tanger provides professional and practical supervision and introduces the residents to its network.

Residents stay in their own room in an apartment. The living room, bathroom and kitchen are shared with the other artist(s). Residents are also invited to use the Tanger Print Club, which has a silk screen printing studio. This residency involves a public final presentation, the form of which will be determined in consultation with the residents. One or two open studios will be organised during the residency, to which an appropriate audience will be invited.

For whom

The residency at Think Tanger is open to visual artists, curators and art critics. For this residency it is not possible to apply as a duo.

Designers should apply via the Creative Industries Fund NL. Per period, one artist and one designer work at Think Tanger at the same time.

Work periods

There are two work periods available:

  • 15 October to 15 December 2024
  • 6 April to 6 June 2025

Applicants are asked to state their preference for a work period on the application form. Every effort will be made to honour this preference. Per period there is room for 1 artist.

How much

The Mondriaan Fund makes a subsidy of € 5.027 available for an artist and of € 3.533 for a curator or art observer to help cover travel expenses, material costs and living costs. This sum is intended for 1 person. In addition, the selected resident is expected to pay a 10% personal contribution. The Mondriaan Fund automatically takes this into account in their ultimate subsidy, you do not need to do anything.

The contribution to artists based in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom can be increased to meet any higher travel costs. This is looked at per situation.

Please note! This application must be submitted in English.

Selection

The selection is made by an advisory committee. Based on the submitted documents, the advisory committee proposes candidates to Think Tanger. They make the final decision on the participants for the residency. An interview may be part of their selection process.*

*Please note! Be aware that the processing time for this selection procedure may exceed three months

Other grants for residencies in the Netherlands and other countries
Because only 1 or 2 residents can be selected for any given residency during each application round, it is inevitable that many will be disappointed. For this reason, we point out that it is also possible to apply for an Artist Project at a different residency location. The specific Artist Project residency applied for may not be one of those already being offered in the Mondriaan Fund application rounds.
