The American Academy in Rome offers visual artists, curators and observers the opportunity to live and work in Rome for 2 months, at the American Academy. The aim of this residency is to renew the connection between the arts and the humanities, but also between contemporary art and tradition. An important part of the stay is that a project or research is created that is inspired by the city of Rome itself.

The studio and living space are located in the American Academy, which is located in the Janiculum, one of Rome’s highest hills. The Academy offers residencies to around 30-35 artists and scolars from various disciplines every year. The residency of the Mondriaan Fund will be included in this. The resident becomes a member of the American Academy communityas an Affiliated Artist during the period of residence. The artist has a studio with living space there. (N.B. the American Academy in Rome does not allow children in the apartment). The members have lunch and dinner together Monday through Friday, thus promoting contacts and the exchange of ideas between artists and scholars.

During your stay you can also use the facilities of the Royal Dutch Institute Rome (KNIR). This institute has a connecting function between the Dutch academic world and the international and Italian scientific institutions present in Rome and promotes contacts by organising lectures and conferences. The KNIR has a network in Rome and an extensive library that can be used for the project or research to be carried out.

The selected resident is expected to conclude the working period at the American Academy with a presentation. This could be a lecture or a small exhibition.

For this residency, no concrete project proposal is expected, but a clear motivation is given as to why you want to participate in this program, what kind of research you want to do and how this research can contribute to the program.

Previously, Baptiste Maitre, Dina Danish, Rory Pilgirm, Petra Noordkamp, Maura Biava and Kevin van Braak have participated in this residency.

For whom

The residency at American Academy in Rome can be requested by visual artists, curators and observers. For this residency it is not possible to apply as a duo.

Work period

There is 1 work period available:

  • 08 September – 30 October 2025

How much?

The Mondriaan Fund makes a subsidy of € 5.339 available for an artist and of € 3.845 for a curator or art observer to help cover travel expenses, material costs and living costs. This sum is intended for 1 person. In addition, the selected resident is expected to pay a 10% personal contribution. The Mondriaan Fund automatically takes this into account in their ultimate subsidy, you do not need to do anything.

The contribution to artists based in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom can be increased to meet any higher travel costs. This is looked at per situation.

General terms and conditions

Selection

The selection is made by an advisory committee. Based on the submitted documents, the advisory committee selects 1 resident.

Other grants for residencies in the Netherlands and other countries

Because only 1 or 2 residents can be selected for any given residency during each application round, it is inevitable that many will be disappointed. For this reason, we point out that it is also possible to apply for an Artist Project at a different residency location. The specific Artist Project residency applied for may not be one of those already being offered in the Mondriaan Fund application rounds.
