ARE (Artist Residencies Enschede) was founded in 2007 and has flourished to become an organisation of international renown. ARE offers artists working in all disciplines the opportunity to explore their practice in a different community while meeting new people, potentially using new materials and experiencing life at a new location. ARE has two guest studios available for international artists, for a work period of three months. ARE emphasises the importance of meaningful and layered cultural exchange. With this residency, ARE aims to boost cultural exchange by making one studio available to an artist from the Netherlands for a period of three months.

ARE sets store by integration with the local (art) environment, and works to help the local community. The residency is located in the building used by local art initiative B93, and encourages interaction between the residents and the other artists in the building. ARE also has close ties with Tetem: the residents can use equipment in the Tetem Lab, such as a laser cutter, embroidery machine and 3D printer. ARE’s mission is to help artists from all around the world to develop their artistic practice and to broaden their horizons. This residency enables the organisation to strengthen cultural exchange and to facilitate the creation of new international connections.

In consultation with ARE, the work period will conclude with a final solo exhibition in the B93 exhibition space or an alternative form of presentation, such as an open studio.

For whom

This residency is intended for a visual artist with a contemporary take on cultural diversity. ARE is looking for a self-reliant artist who is interested in a work period together with an international artist-in-residence, and who is open to social interaction with the artists from the B93 artists initiative. Preference is given to an artist who forms a relationship with the local surroundings and/or the Enschede community during the residency.

General terms and conditions

Selection

An advisory committee assists in the selection process, recommending candidates to Artist Residencies Enschede based on the submitted documents. Artist Residencies Enschede has ultimate responsibility for selecting the participants in the residency.

Other grants for residencies in the Netherlands and other countries

As only 1 or 2 residents can be selected for any given residency during each selection round, many applicants will be disappointed. For this reason, we point out that you can also apply for an Artist Project with a residency at a different location. That Artist Project residency location may not be one of those already offered in the Mondriaan Fund Residency application round.
