Residency in the framework of the 10th f/stop Festival for Photography Leipzig in 2024
f/stop – Festival for Photography Leipzig (organized by D21 artspace) is offering a three-months residency in Leipzig to a Netherland based artist working with lens-based media (photography and film) but are not necessarily limited to those media. The residency offers the possibility to research and develop a new work that will be presented in the framework of f/stop Festival for Photography Leipzig which will take place from May 31 until June 16 2024. The resulting work will become a part of the festival exhibition; a preview or preliminary state of the work will be presented during the Leipzig Book Fair in the framework of f/stop’s collaboration with the fair on occasion of the Netherlands being Guest of Honor at the Leipzig Book Fair in 2024.
The residency is initiated on occasion of the 10th anniversary of the festival. This edition of the festival is curated by Magdalena Stöger and Leon Hösl. Their concept expands various aspects of “Radical Care” the D21 annual topic 2023/24. In its exhibitions and its accompanying program, the 10th f/stop Festival for Photography will investigate the relationship between institutional structures of care and collective, activist positions from contemporary as well as historical artistic perspectives.
For whom
Visual artists may apply for a residency at f/stop Festival residency. For applications for duos or collaborative partnerships, each person must apply separately. A duo is understood to be two artists who consistently produce work together as a single unit. Collaborating partners producing work together on a more short-term or long-term basis can be considered as duos, as long as they each submit a joint plan leading to a single result. During the residency, duos or collaborative partners live and work in the same space.
Working period
1 working periods of 3 months from February – April, 2024.
Presentation during Photo Book Fair: March 17-20, 2024.
Participation in the f/stop Festival: May 31 until June 16, 2024.
How much?
The costs of renting the studio and living space and the support that residents receive from f/stop Festival residency are paid directly to f/stop Festival residency by the Mondriaan Fund. The remaining costs of travel, living expenses and materials for each working period is assessed at € 7.623.-
This amount is for one person. Residents are expected to contribute 10%, this contribution is settled by the Mondriaan Fund. If a duo or a collaborative partnership is selected for the residency, these amounts increase proportionally to cover travel and living costs for the second resident.
The contribution to artists based in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom can be increased to meet any higher travel costs. This is looked at per situation.

Other grants for residencies in the Netherlands and other countries
Because only 1 or 2 residents can be selected for any given residency during each selection round, many applicants will be disappointed. For this reason, we point out that you can also apply for an Artist Project with a residency at a different location. That Artist Project residency location may not be one of those already offered in the Mondriaan Fund Residency application round.
