Kunstwerf Het Lage Noorden is located in the middle of the Frisian countryside on the mudflats and has a 2-hectare site with studios, also suitable for large-scale work, a library with a shared office space and a presentation room.

With a love for making and materials, HLN offers a studio with temporary living space (residence) so that visual artists can work with their hands, heads and hearts. To be able to create and to delve deeper with both content and professionally in order to take the next step in their development. Workshops, materials and technical support are available upon request.

Every year, Het Lage Noorden facilitates artists in residence from February 15 to May 15. During this period, several artists can work in Het Lage Noorden simultaneously.

Het Lage Noorden hosts national and international artists from all cultures and career stages. We create a supportive and stimulating context in which new work and ideas can be developed, tested and shared.

The rural location and temporary living and working at this location means that artists can really take distance for themselves and create a space for reflection and focus.

As mentioned, making is our foundation. But our place has another unique proposition. After three years on the Wadden coast, we experience the added value of this special area and the role we can play in it. Not only does this area offer a special landscape, the peace, quiet or focus that many people are looking for, but it is also a special ‘local’ base when it comes to major ‘nature-related’ and current social themes: The rise of the sea level / Climate change / Agriculture and fishing / Darkness and stars / Energy issues / Shrinkage / City vs countryside / Sustainability.

Artists play an important role in these issues. Through a hands-on mentality, daring and unconventional approach, they can make a substantial contribution to these issues.

Residents at Het Lage Noorden stay in a spacious single room in the guest house, share a kitchen-diner and have access to a suitable work space/studio of approximately 40m2. There is also a larger assemblage area. More information about this can be found on the Het Lage Noorden website.

From May to September, Het Lage Noorden transforms into a tourist company. During this period we would like to give our visitors the opportunity to get to know the artist and their creative process. For this purpose, we are organising a one-off ‘open studio’ at the start of May.

Every artist in the artist-in-residence program makes a project proposal. Based on this, an estimate can be made for additional work and materials. The working period ends with an evaluation. In consultation at the artist’s request, a presentation or other closing event can take place.

For whom?

This residency is open to all forms of visual art, with the preference given to artists who plan to use the work period to create a large work and/or create work/conduct research in which every aspect of the singular surroundings represent added value.

The contribution

The Mondriaan Fund makes a monthly contribution of € 2,000 available to help cover travel expenses, material costs and accommodation costs. This sum is intended for 1 person. In addition, the selected resident is expected to pay a 10% personal contribution, the Mondriaan Fund automatically takes this into account in their ultimate contribution, you do not need to do anything.

In the case that a duo or collaboration is selected for the residency, the associated contribution will be raised to cover additional travel expenses, as well as a proportionate sum to contribute to the other applicant’s accommodation costs.

The contribution to residents based in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom can be increased to accommodate any higher travel costs. This is considered on a case-by-case basis.

Selection

An advisory committee assists in the selection process, recommending candidates to Het Lage Noorden based on the submitted documents. The selected applicants will be invited to an interview with Het Lage Noorden. The final selection will be made following the interviews. Should a suitable candidate not be found amongst the applicants, the advisory committee can recommend their own candidates.

Other grants for residencies in the Netherlands and other countries

As only 1 or 2 residents can be selected for any given residency during each selection round, many applicants will be disappointed. For this reason, we point out that you can also apply for an Artist Project with a residency at a different location. That Artist Project residency location may not be one of those already offered in the Mondriaan Fund Residency application round.
