VierVaart is located on a former farm near the village of Groede, surrounded by the polders of Zeelandic Flanders. The initiative unites art, organic gardening and living in natural surroundings. There is an exhibition space, an organic garden, a mini campsite and accommodation.
VierVaart was founded in 2016 by Iris Cornelis, Maartje Korstanje, Piet Korstanje and Heleen van Elsacker. Iris is an exhibition maker, former owner of a gallery in Rotterdam, and was also a co-curator at RAM/Berry Koedam and the ramfoundation. Maartje is a visual artist. Piet and Heleen have a background in biodynamic fruit growing, and Heleen is a beekeeper. Fruit and vegetables are grown at VierVaart, and there are beehives. Groede is close to Belgium, not far from the coast and the Zwin Nature Park.
VierVaart stimulates the connection between art and culture, and is focused on visual artists who are keen to participate in a residency in light of the connection between their work or way of working and the location. The work or research would preferably be connected with the environment, the surrounding farmland, the border region or the Westerschelde, or in any case demonstrate local engagement.
The resident will have the opportunity to conduct research or create new work on location, for which they will have access to a studio. VierVaart sets great store by sustainability and encourages the use of local or existing materials. The resident will be invited to collaborate with local people and businesses, or seek interaction within VierVaart. At VierVaart, the resident will be able to focus on the work, during two months of research, experimentation, production and reflection. The residency is in autumn, a period of calm on the grounds. The relative isolation of the location in the countryside means that there is minimal distraction and great scope for concentration. The resident must be able to work independently at this secluded location, and supply their own tools and materials. They must also have access to their own means of transport.
An exhibition at VierVaart is not part of this residency. However, a suitable means of presentation or public event for this work period will be discussed with the artist.
For whom
A residency at VierVaart is open to visual artists. Applicants applying as part of a duo or collaboration are required to submit individual applications.

Other grants for residencies in the Netherlands and other countries
As only 1 or 2 residents can be selected for any given residency during each selection round, many applicants will be disappointed. For this reason, we point out that you can also apply for an Artist Project with a residency at a different location. That Artist Project residency location may not be one of those already offered in the Mondriaan Fund Residency application round.
