The Mondriaan Fund, in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Villa Kamogawa in Kyoto, offers visual artists, curators and observers the opportunity to live and work in Kyoto for 3 months. The residency is usually only open to German artists, but in honour of Expo Osaka 2025, three artists from the Netherlands will have the opportunity to take advantage of this special residency.
Since 2011, Villa Kamogawa has offered artist-in-residence programs for German artists and as of 2023 they have also regularly worked with artists from other countries.
The residency is located in the centre of the historic city of Kyoto near the Imperial Palace. Through this residency, the residents are supported in realising their projects and strengthening their contacts with the Japanese cultural field. The starting point of this residency is that residents with a contemporary vision respond to the history of the place, the customs and crafts, in interaction with the local community.
The living and working space are located on the first floor of Villa Kamogawa. The resident has a living and working space with a kitchenette. There is also a communal kitchen and terrace. There is also a separate studio that is shared with all other residents. There are three residents in the building per period. The residency is open to parents with children under the age of four.
Villa Kamogawa has a library and an event space for 120 people for a possible concluding meeting.
For whom
The residency at Villa Kamogawa in Kyoto can be requested by visual artists, curators and observers. For applications from duos or partnerships, each person must submit an application separately.
A duo is defined as: 2 artists or 2 curators or observers or a combination of these who structurally create work together. Collaborations can (on occasion) be considered as duos if they submit a joint plan for the working period that leads to one result. In addition, a duo must live and work together in one space during the residency.
Working period
There are 3 working period available:
- 16 January to 15 April 2025
- 08 May to 05 Augustus 2025
- 11 September to 09 December 2025
Applicants are asked to state their preference for a work period on the application form, and every effort will be made to honour this preference.
How much
The Mondriaan Fund makes a contribution of € 9,735 per period for an artist and € 7,044 for a curator or observer for travel costs, material costs and living costs. This amount is intended for 1 person. In addition, the resident is expected to make a personal contribution of 10%. This is automatically offset by the Mondriaan Fund in its contribution. You do not have to do anything.
If a duo or partnership is selected for the residency, the residency amount will be increased by an amount for additional travel expenses and a proportionate amount for living costs for the other applicant.
The contribution to residents based in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom can be increased to accommodate any higher travel costs. This is considered on a case-by-case basis.
Please note! This application must be submitted in English.
Application
The deadline for submitting an application for a work period in 2025 is 26 September 2024 before 04:00 PM (CEST) / 10:00 AM (AST).
Before submitting an application, please see the Residency page for the terms and conditions, application procedure and assessment procedure.
Please also read the terms and conditions applicable to Mondriaan Fund contributions.
Selection
The selection is made by an advisory committee. Based on the submitted documents, the advisory committee selects 3 residents. A representative of Villa Kamogawa participates in the meeting as an observer.
Other grants for residencies in the Netherlands and other countries
Because only 1 or 2 residents can be selected for any given residency during each application round, it is inevitable that many will be disappointed. For this reason, we point out that it is also possible to apply for an Artist Project at a different residency location. The specific Artist Project residency applied for may not be one of those already being offered in the Mondriaan Fund application rounds.
