On November 1st, essay #16 appeared in the series of the Mondriaan Fund. The publication Scratching the Surface: An Exploration of Graffiti and Street Art is composed of seven essays written by Daniël de Jongh, Lene ter Haar, Robert Kaltenhäuser, Javier Abarca, Stephen Burke, Raenys Martis, Ana Maria Hernandez and Robin Vermeulen. The authors all share their professional and personal experiences with graffiti and street art, offering a range of perspectives on these artforms as well as showcasing their potential. The variety in positions and perspectives of the authors also generates plenty of room for further discussion.
This publication is part of a long-term research project within the Mondriaan Fund, focusing on how the art forms of street art and graffiti can fit within the current subsidy system. Research projects like this are essential for broadening and deepening the fund’s perspective and knowledge.
Scratching the Surface is number 16 in the essay series of the Mondriaan Fund and appears in both English and Dutch with supporting images. Published by the Mondriaan Fund in collaboration with Jap Sam Books, printed by NPN Drukkers and designed by Studio Janneke Hendriks.
From November 1, the publication Scratching the Surface is available at Jap Sam Books.
The book launch took place on Friday, November 1 at Penningsfoundation in Eindhoven
During this afternoon, we delved deeper into the art forms of graffiti and street art, amidst the photography exhibition With One Eye Open by curator Jasper van Es.
From graffiti to murals and street art: how do these expressions relate to each other? How do you display graffiti in a museum? What position does street art occupy in relation to the canonical arts? When does a production truly add something to a place, and how can we appreciate it as artistically distinctive?
With the authors of this new publication and contributers from the field, including Javier Abarca and Mick La Rock, we explored the relationship between graffiti, street art, and visual art, as well as how creators from these disciplines relate to the subsidy system.
