The 13th edition of the Prospects exhibition opened today. From 28 to 30 March, the work of 116 starting artists will be showcased during the Art Rotterdam art fair. The Mondriaan Fund organises the ‘Prospects’ exhibition each year to give the visibility of starting artists an extra boost. The exhibition is curated by curators Johan Gustavsson and Louise Bjeldbak Henriksen.
All artists received a financial contribution in 2023 within the Artist Start grant of the Mondriaan Fund to kickstart their career. The artworks range from photography and tapestries to video, paintings, performances and sculptures. The subjects are also diverse.
For instance, migration and cultural narratives are central to the work of Chris Becher and Tian Teng. Artist Annabel van Royen uses photography to explore the fluidity of identity. And Indra Gleizde explores themes of freedom and collective memory through collages. Caring for nature is a recurring theme as in the work of Rick van der Klooster and Elia Kalogianni. And Diego Grandry uses the visual language of video games, sports and other popular culture to reflect on social and political themes.
Read the stories of all 116 artists in the Prospects guide available at the information desk or online. Or listen to audio stories accompanying some of the works by the curators, Young Collectors Circle and Kunstmeisjes.
The proximity of Art Rotterdam gives art professionals and collectors, but also a broad group of interested parties, the opportunity to become acquainted with the work of these promising artists. The exhibition is also an excellent opportunity to show what has been achieved in part thanks to a contribution from the Mondriaan Fund. An Artist Start contribution is intended for starting artists who have been working professionally for a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 4 years.
