Emma Dean is a curator, writer and editor based in Newcastle upon Tyne.
As Curator at BALTIC, she contributes to the strategic direction of the artistic programme and its associated research strands. Since joining in 2012, Emma has curated numerous exhibitions including mid-career surveys of Thomas Scheibitz, Caroline Achaintre, Huma Bhabha and Sutapa Biswas, and major institutional presentations by David Jablonowski, Jesse Wine, Jumana Emil Abboud, Sofia Stevi, Ifeoma U. Anyaeji, Joy Labinjo and Mounira Al Solh. Emma manages international partnerships, commissions work for public realm and digital contexts, edits and contributes to artists’ monographs and collaborates with colleagues on the curation of the public programme. As part of her role, she also leads on BALTIC’s Artists’ Residency Programme which supports research and professional development through residencies at BALTIC and partner institutions in the UK and internationally.
Prior to BALTIC, Emma was Head of Exhibitions at MK Gallery, Milton Keynes where she oversaw the programme of exhibitions, offsite projects, film, performance, events, commissions and publications. She has also held curatorial positions at Modern Art Oxford and the Pitt Rivers Museum.
