Sorcha Carey is Curator of the 2024 Folkestone Triennial, and Director of Collective, the Edinburgh based contemporary art space which since 1984, has worked with artists to develop, produce and present new work.
For nearly twenty years, she has specialised in the commissioning of new work with a particular interest in working with artists to develop sited projects for a range of public spaces and contexts.
As Director of Edinburgh Art Festival (2011- 2021 editions), she initiated the festival’s annual commissions programme, each year inviting artists from across Scotland, the UK and internationally to develop new projects for the city; as well as creating a dedicated opportunity for early career artists to be supported to make and present new work. Between 2003 and 2008, she worked on three editions of the Liverpool Biennial, including leading a series of site-specific commissions for Liverpool’s 2008 Capital of Culture Programme by artists including Ai Wei Wei, Tomas Saraceno, Diller Scofidio and Renfro, Atelier Bow Wow, and Annette Messager.
She is a trustee of Cample Line in Dumfriesshire and from 2017-2022, was Chair of Festivals Edinburgh, the development body for Edinburgh’s festivals.
