Sergio Rubira coordinated the Master in Contemporary Art History and Visual Culture of the Complutense University of Madrid, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid.

He was Editor-in-Chief of EXIT Image & Culture magazine (since 2010). He contributed regularly to El Cultural, cultural weekly of El Mundo newspaper. He was part of RMS La Asociación, a curatorial office based in Madrid (1999-2014). As part of RMS La Asociación, Rubira ran RMS, El Espacio, a non-profit art space (2010-12), and curated Impossible Show (Temporary Gallery, Cologne, 2013-14), El gabinete de un aficionado (Centro d’Art La Panera, Lleida, 2013), Sexy Books (Matadero Madrid, 2012), Contextos en desuso (Centre d’Art La Panera, Lleida, 2012), Sur le dandysme aujourd’hui (CGAC, Santiago de Compostela, 2010), Entornos próximos (ARTIUM, Vitoria, 2008), among others. He was co-director of the Image Study Days, Comunidad de Madrid (2005-2009) and co-director of the seminar on curatorship Comisariando el presente, La Casa Encendida (since 2013). He was director of Madrid 45 (Comunidad de Madrid), an educational programme for young artists and curators, and DIDDCC, a research group on museum politics, exhibition displays and collecting, hosted by CA2M (Móstoles, Madrid).

As a free-lance curator, Sergio Rubira organized: La idea en un signo (Centro de Arte de Alcobendas, 2017); Colección XIII: Hacia un nuevo museo de arte contemporáneo (CA2M, Móstoles, 2016); Genealogías del punk, punk, post punk y contra punk (CA2M, Móstoles, 2015); Situaciones (Art Cologne, Bienal de Venecia, y Centre d’Art La Panera, 2015); imaginar_historiar, with Mónica Portillo (CA2M, Móstoles, 2009) and La mirada a estratos, with Estrella de Diego (Museo de Zamora, 2003). He has written many essays on contemporary art for different institutions such as the IVAM, Valencia; Kunsthall Grunland, Porsgrunn, Norway; FRAC Bourgogne and Musée de Beaux Arts, Dijon, France; La Biennale di Venezia; Tranzit, Prague; MUSAC, León; Centre Pompidou-Metz, Metz, France; PS1-MoMA, Nueva York; La Casa Encendida, Madrid, among others.
